MLB Trade Rumors: Nick Castellanos' Future and Potential Destinations (2026)

The Philadelphia Phillies are in a peculiar predicament: they desperately want to offload outfielder Nick Castellanos, despite his recent postseason heroics and the fact that they're on the hook for a hefty $20 million for his final contract year in 2026. This situation is certainly raising eyebrows across Major League Baseball.

Phillies' President Dave Dombrowski recently reaffirmed the team's intention, stating, "Yes, we do. We still plan on doing that," when asked about Castellanos' future on the roster. It seems the team believes they've significantly diminished his market value, yet they're still aiming to orchestrate a trade.

But here's where it gets interesting... MLB insider Ken Rosenthal shed some light on potential landing spots for Castellanos on 'Fair Territory' this past weekend. He pointed to two teams that might be willing to take a chance on the veteran.

First up: the San Diego Padres. Rosenthal mentioned them as a prime candidate, especially since Castellanos has been taking ground balls at first base. With the Padres actively seeking a first baseman and a right-handed bat, this move could make sense. The crucial question, however, is how much of Castellanos' substantial $20 million salary the Phillies would be willing to absorb to make a deal happen.

Is this a bit of a long shot? Castellanos originally entered the league as a third baseman over a decade ago with the Tigers. Since then, he's exclusively played the outfield, and frankly, his defensive performance there hasn't been stellar. In fact, last summer he was among the worst defensive outfielders in the league, leading to him losing his everyday status midway through 2025 as his defense continued to falter. A switch to first base could potentially be a career-revitalizing move, if he can successfully adapt.

Rosenthal further elaborated, "I do expect the Phillies to trade him, I do expect to see them pick up most of the money in that deal." He added that Castellanos would then be entering his free-agent year, giving him a chance to rebuild his value. While his hitting ability remains, his defense has been the primary concern. Over his four seasons in Philadelphia, Castellanos has posted a .260/.306/.426 slash line. While not terrible at first glance, his total WAR (Wins Above Replacement) over those four years is a mere 1.3. For perspective, Brandon Marsh alone accumulated a higher WAR of 1.7 in just 2025.

This is the part most people miss: Castellanos must be motivated to turn things around. The Phillies have been transparent about their desire to move him, and the 33-year-old surely understands his career is on the line. He needs to perform exceptionally well in this contract year, even if the Phillies are footing a significant portion of his salary elsewhere.

And this is where it gets even more speculative... Could a return to his roots be on the horizon?

What about a homecoming with the Miami Marlins? Rosenthal admitted, "Miami is always another possibility, that's where Castellanos is from, I am sure he'd love to go there. I'm not sure they'd love to have him." This suggests a mutual interest might be lacking.

Then there are the Pittsburgh Pirates. ESPN's Jesse Rodgers, in his bold predictions for the offseason, suggested that another rebuilding team might seize the opportunity to acquire a former Silver Slugger. Rodgers envisions a scenario where the Phillies cover a substantial portion of Castellanos' $20 million salary, perhaps around $15 million, with the Pirates receiving him without sending any players back. The idea is that Castellanos could reignite his career in Pittsburgh and silence his critics.

From the Phillies' perspective, offloading Castellanos and just $5 million of his salary would be a massive win. They are in desperate need of a team willing to take on a significant financial commitment. If no such deal materializes, the entire $20 million could become a sunk cost, and he might even end up on waivers. The ultimate awkward outcome? They might have to backtrack on their word and keep him on the roster.

What do you think? Is a trade for Nick Castellanos a smart move for any team, or are the Phillies stuck with a costly player they can't unload? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
