Urgent Alert: Health Canada has issued a nationwide recall for a specific soap due to a concerning chemical hazard. This means you need to take action if you have this product!
On Wednesday, Health Canada announced a recall of soaps from Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co., an Ontario-based company. The reason? A potential chemical hazard stemming from an elevated concentration of methyl eugenol.
According to the official recall notice, approximately 400 units of the “Shades of Grey” bar soap were sold across Canada between January 2019 and January 2026. These soaps were manufactured in Kenora, Ontario, and come in various sizes: 16g, 67g, and 135g bars.
But here's where it gets interesting... Methyl eugenol is a tricky substance. While it's prohibited as a standalone ingredient due to its potential to cause cancer, it's allowed as a naturally occurring component in certain botanical extracts. However, there are strict limits on how much can be used, depending on the type of product.
So far, thankfully, there have been no reported incidents or injuries related to this recall as of January 7th.
Health Canada's advice is clear: immediately stop using the recalled soap. Dispose of it properly and contact Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. for a replacement. You can reach them via email at lakeofthewoodssoap@gmail.com for more details.
In addition, Health Canada encourages consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to this or any other consumer product or cosmetic. You can do so by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
